THE ROAD TO DEFORESTATION FREEDOM WITH THE EUDR
Global deforestation is one of the greatest threats to the environment. With the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR/VO 2023/115), the EU is making an important contribution to reducing global deforestation caused by the production and trade of raw materials. It replaces the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR/EU 995/2010), which prohibits the import of illegally produced timber. The EUDR introduces new requirements for the supply chains of timber and forest products. By complying with the requirements, companies are making an active contribution to protecting forests.In response to international feedback and to ensure smooth implementation, the EU Commission has proposed an extension of the deadline by one year. This means that the EUDR is expected to apply to large companies from December 30, 2025 and to smaller companies from June 30, 2026.
EU REGULATION ON CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Global forest loss and threats to biodiversity are increasing dramatically. Forests are a vital component for people and the environment and offer numerous benefits. In addition to timber production and water storage, they make a decisive contribution to climate protection and the preservation of biodiversity. Deforestation not only threatens the livelihoods of many people, communities and animals, but also increases the risk of disease outbreaks. The EU Deforestation Regulation makes an important contribution to combating deforestation and illegal timber products and thus supports the protection of our environment.In addition to protecting the environment and human rights, it also opens up new opportunities for companies. Sustainable practices are promoted and long-term relationships are established. At the same time, companies are faced with new challenges. Compliance with the regulation requires additional investment and increases the complexity of supply chains. In addition to rising costs, this also entails increased bureaucracy.
CENTRAL REQUIREMENTS: TRANSPARENCY AND DUTY OF CARE
Compliance with the EUDR requires comprehensive supply chain audits and new, effective measures. In this context, the origin of products must be closely scrutinized. Transparency and traceability are of crucial importance. Compliance with the EUDR should ensure fair working conditions in particular and make a positive contribution to the environment. Certain goods made from raw materials, such as soy, coffee or rubber, may only be sold throughout the EU if the following conditions, among others, are met:
1. products must be produced without deforestation.
2. production must comply with the legal requirements of the country of origin
3. a due diligence declaration must be available for the goods.
For the best possible implementation of the EUDR, companies must analyze their existing supply chains, design requirements and clearly define responsibilities. Regular monitoring and reporting are also required. Compliance with the EUDR is verified through inspections.
