WHY THE WASHABILITY OF PPE IS SO IMPORTANT

Washing personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly is crucial for safety in the workplace. This is because soiled PPE can not only be unhygienic, but also lose its protective effect. At the same time, not all PPE is suitable for cleaning – incorrect washing can damage materials and impair their function.

Whether it’s workwear, high-visibility clothing or protective gloves – the washability of PPE depends heavily on the material, standard and area of use. This issue is becoming increasingly important, particularly when it comes to protective gloves: demand for washable protective gloves is rising, as they offer a hygienic, sustainable and cost-effective solution for everyday work. Correctly maintaining PPE not only ensures hygiene but also a longer service life and reliable protection.

But how do you wash PPE correctly, what care is required – and how can you tell which PPE is washable?

WHAT HAPPENS IF PPE IS WASHED INCORRECTLY?

Incorrect care can significantly impair the protective effect. Materials can be damaged, functions lost, or standards no longer met – this applies in particular to protective gloves, where the material and coating play a key role.

Typical consequences:

+ Reduced protection (e.g. for high-visibility clothing or weatherproof clothing): Reflective strips can lose their luminosity if washed incorrectly, thereby reducing visibility. In weatherproof clothing, coatings can be damaged, causing water-repellent or windproof properties to deteriorate.

+ Damaged materials or seams: Incorrect washing temperatures, harsh detergents or mechanical stress can cause fabrics to fray, coatings to peel off or seams to weaken.

+ Shorter service life of PPE: Incorrect washing leads to faster wear and tear, meaning PPE needs to be replaced sooner and its protective function diminishes more quickly.

Correctly maintaining PPE not only preserves its functionality – it also actively ensures greater safety in daily use.

WHICH PPE IS WASHABLE – AND WHICH ISN’T?

Not all PPE can simply be put in the washing machine. Washability depends on the design, materials and regulatory requirements.

Typical examples:

+ Washable PPE: Many workwear, high-visibility and weatherproof garments are designed to be washed – however, the manufacturer’s specific care instructions are always decisive. Modern, washable protective gloves are also becoming increasingly important in this regard, as they can be reused multiple times, thereby saving costs and resources.

+ PPE with limited washability: Many PPE components can only be cleaned under specific conditions. This means: limited wash cycles, special care instructions and potential restrictions on the protective function if cleaned incorrectly.

+ PPE that cannot be washed or requires special cleaning: Some PPE must not be washed or requires special cleaning procedures to ensure the protective function is not compromised.

Important: Regardless of the product, the manufacturer’s specifications and care instructions always take precedence. Information on washability can usually be found on the care label inside the product, in the instructions for use or in the manufacturer’s technical data sheets.

SIMPLY UNDERSTANDING CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Are you unsure what the care symbols on your PPE mean? In our guide, we explain all the symbols clearly – so that you can clean your PPE properly and ensure it continues to provide protection.

WASHING PPE CORRECTLY – TIPS FOR HYGIENE AND PROTECTION

Washing PPE correctly preserves its protective function and extends its lifespan. Proper care is crucial.

What matters:

+ Follow the manufacturer’s washing temperature instructions
+ Do not use harsh detergents or fabric softeners
+ Wash PPE separately from everyday clothing
+ Fasten all fastenings to prevent damage
+ Dry in accordance with care instructions (not all PPE is suitable for tumble drying)

This ensures that PPE not only remains serviceable for longer, but also continues to meet protection and safety requirements.

CARE FOR PPE PROPERLY – FOR LONG-TERM SAFETY

The washability of PPE is a crucial factor for safety, hygiene and functionality in everyday working life. Cleaning and maintaining PPE properly not only preserves its protective effect but also ensures a longer service life.

At the same time, a clear trend is emerging: washable protective gloves are becoming increasingly important, as they represent a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to disposable products.
It is important to note: not all PPE is washable – and incorrect cleaning can do more harm than good.

Ultimately, only PPE that is properly maintained can provide reliable protection.
