WHY PPE IS ESSENTIAL IN AGRICULTURE

Personal protective equipment (PPE) in agriculture is a crucial component for safe and efficient working practices in the agricultural sector. Whether in the field, in the barn or when operating machinery – the demands placed on workwear in agriculture are varied and often particularly demanding.

Weather conditions, physical strain and working with machinery, animals or chemicals are part of everyday life. At the same time, protection, comfort and freedom of movement must work together optimally. The right PPE not only protects against injuries but also supports productive work under changing conditions.

But which PPE is appropriate for agriculture – and what should you look for when choosing it?

TYPICAL REQUIREMENTS IN AGRICULTURE

Work in the agricultural sector is characterised by changing environments and a wide variety of tasks. The requirements vary significantly depending on the specific area of work.

An overview of typical challenges:

+ Weather conditions such as rain, sun, cold or wind

+ Working on uneven, slippery or muddy ground

+ Handling machinery, tools and vehicles

+ Contact with animals, plants or chemicals

+ High physical strain and long working hours

This diversity shows that PPE in agriculture must be versatile and meet a range of requirements simultaneously.

WHAT PPE IS MANDATORY IN AGRICULTURE?

There is no blanket requirement for specific PPE in agriculture. The decisive factor is always the individual risk assessment in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the guidelines of the DGUV.

This means that PPE is always mandatory if existing risks cannot be sufficiently reduced by other measures. For example, if the risk posed by machinery, slippery floors or the handling of chemicals cannot be eliminated through technical or organisational measures, suitable PPE must be worn – such as safety footwear, protective gloves or hearing protection.

Particularly when handling chemicals or plant protection products, specific regulations often apply which must be strictly adhered to.

AN OVERVIEW OF PPE AND WORKWEAR

The right combination of PPE and workwear ensures safety, comfort and efficiency in day-to-day agricultural work.

Key components include:

Safety footwear (EN ISO 20345): Slip-resistant, durable and often water-repellent – ideal for wet and uneven surfaces

Protective gloves: Provide protection against mechanical impact and – depending on the application – against chemicals, moisture or contact with plant protection products (ISO 18889).

Weatherproof clothing (EN 343): For work in rain, wind and changing weather conditions

+ Cold-weather protective clothing (EN 342): Essential for working in cold environments or during winter

High-visibility clothing (EN ISO 20471): Increases visibility when working on roads or with machinery

+ Head, eye and ear protection: protection against impacts, dust, UV radiation and noise from machinery

+ Lightweight and breathable workwear: supports the body in warm temperatures and reduces heat stress when working outdoors

It is essential that workwear in the agricultural sector is durable, weatherproof and, at the same time, allows for freedom of movement.

COMMON MISTAKES REGARDING PPE IN AGRICULTURE

In practice, important factors in the selection of PPE are often overlooked.

Typical mistakes:

+ Unsuitable clothing for changing weather conditions

+ Lack of slip resistance in footwear on wet surfaces

+ Inadequate protection when working with machinery or chemicals

+ Insufficient comfort – PPE is not worn consistently

+ Incorrect combination of different PPE components

The result: protection is reduced and the risk in everyday working life increases. PPE should therefore always be selected with practicality and the specific task in mind.

THE FOUNDATION FOR SAFE WORKING

PPE in agriculture is far more than just basic equipment. It ensures that work can be carried out safely and efficiently under a wide variety of conditions.

Choosing the right workwear and protective equipment reduces risks, increases comfort and supports day-to-day work – from the field to the barn.

Because in the agricultural sector too, good equipment is the foundation for safe and successful work.
