INVISIBLE DANGER IN EVERYDAY WORK – WHY ESD PROTECTION IS SO IMPORTANT
Electrostatic discharges (ESD) are invisible to the human eye – but can have a significant impact in many industrial areas. ESD poses a serious safety risk, especially where sensitive electronic components are processed or explosive atmospheres exist.Even the smallest discharges can damage components, disrupt production processes, or, in the worst case, trigger dangerous ignition sources. This makes it all the more important that safety shoes in such working environments not only offer mechanical protection, but also reliably and controllably dissipate electrostatic charges.
At the AS Quality Center, our in-house testing laboratory, we therefore carry out specific ESD tests on safety shoes. Here you can find out how these tests are carried out, what is measured and why the results are so crucial.
ESD TESTING – CONTROLLED DISCHARGE INSTEAD OF RISK
ESD testing checks whether safety shoes can reliably and controllably discharge electrostatic charges. To do this, the electrical resistance of the safety shoes is measured under strictly defined laboratory conditions – a crucial prerequisite for safe use in ESD protection zones.For the test, the safety shoes are integrated into a special measuring arrangement in which the electrical resistance between the shoe sole and the test surface is determined. This records whether electrostatic charges are safely dissipated or whether critical voltages build up.
The focus is on the precise determination of the resistance value. Only if this is within the standard-compliant limits are the safety shoes considered ESD-compliant. Models outside this range are not approved for use in sensitive working environments.
In this way, it is possible to test objectively and comprehensively whether safety shoes meet the high requirements of modern, safety-critical work areas.
WHAT THE TEST RESULTS MEAN – PROTECTION FOR TECHNOLOGY AND PEOPLE
The results of ESD testing are much more than just laboratory values. They determine whether safety shoes can be used in safety-critical work areas – and whether they provide reliable protection there.ESD-compliant safety shoes make a significant contribution to process and occupational safety:
+ They protect sensitive electronic components, for example in electronics manufacturing or semiconductor production, from damage caused by electrostatic discharge.
+ They reduce the risk of dangerous ignition sources in potentially explosive working environments.
+ They ensure that electrostatic charges are dissipated in a controlled manner instead of building up unnoticed.
Especially in sensitive production environments, ESD protection is therefore not an optional extra, but a fundamental prerequisite for safe, stable, and trouble-free processes.
